Spartans Carry Win Streak into the New Year in Series Sweep 89–74

Round Rock, Texas · Written by Emmanuel Ramirez

The visiting Louisiana Crusaders traveled to Round Rock looking to avoid going winless against the first-year Spartans after already suffering defeat at home earlier in the year. The heroics of Jamari Alexander and hustle plays of Keyshawn Garland were the separating factors in the Spartans’ 12-point win.

This win not only marks the second time the Spartans have beaten a program both on the road and at home, but also extends the team’s streak to three consecutive victories.

Slow Start, Familiar Identity

Nearly 20 days had passed since the Spartans last took the floor on Dec. 20, and the rust showed early. Five turnovers in the opening minutes allowed the Crusaders to briefly control the tempo. Head Coach Donald Jefferson expected the slow start but trusted his team’s defensive foundation.

“I knew it was going to be a slow start but same thing as always, gotta get it on defense.”

Defense Creates Separation

Defense once again proved to be the difference. Five Spartans recorded at least one steal, and the team forced 26 turnovers overall. Those takeaways translated directly into 14 points, helping open the gap as the game progressed.

“It always starts on defense. Once we get stops, the offense will come.”

Alexander Leads the Charge

As the game settled in, scoring came in waves. The Spartans went on runs of 8–0, 7–0, and 11–0, with Jamari Alexander spearheading the offense. The sophomore guard finished with a game-high 23 points while shooting 40% from the field.

Despite going 0–6 from beyond the arc, Alexander remained aggressive and confident, attacking the basket and creating opportunities for teammates.

“It’s basketball — you’re going to make shots, you’re going to miss shots. But as long as you keep doing things the right way, it’s going to come.”

— Jamari Alexander

Alexander also led the Spartans with seven assists, continuing his growth as a floor general. Improved court vision has been a focal point for the coaching staff as they develop him into a true point guard.

“Right now we’re working on his point guard skills — seeing the floor, running the offense. We know his scoring is going to come; that’s just natural.”

Garland Does the Dirty Work

Keyshawn Garland’s impact extended far beyond the box score. The forward recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, including six offensive boards. Garland accounted for half of the Spartans’ 12 offensive rebounds, creating 12 second-chance points.

He also added two steals and an assist, showcasing the hustle and physicality that have become his trademark.
