Wednesday saw the Spartans take the familiar two hour drive down to the 210 to take on the St. Phillips College Tigers. The last time the red and black headed down to San Antonio was over a month ago picking up a 17 point win against San Antonio College. This time around against the fellow Alamo City College District members, the Spartans left with a 31 point victory. A monster first half from Jaxson Moss and strong contributions from the rest of the line up led to the road win.
Both opening possessions for either side came up empty and the first points of the day came off of an offensive rebound for the Tigers that led to a close bucket underneath the basket. Head Coach Donald Jefferson’s squad lost the rebound battle 42-40. However, the exemplary effort from the entire squad was the key contributing factor in the win.
“Yeah we got beat by two rebounds, but to see the overall stats, how we’re sharing the ball, getting shots up, that’s what you want to see.”

After the Tiger’s opening score, the Spartans went on a 23-6 run led by Moss. The Spartans’ leading scorer on the night knocked down his first shot from the field coming from three-point land. The team shot 34% from downtown and 61% from inside the arc. At the end of the half Moss tallied 20 points yet the help he received was just as important. Keyshawn Garland entered the break with 10 points as he was flanked by both Amare Carter and Jamari Alexander with eight points each.
Moss was unstoppable in the first, finding his shot from all different spots on the floor. Off the dribble, attacking the paint and finding his shot from 3, it seemed like every opportunity was guaranteed to go in. Moss realizes that when he gets going, it opens opportunities for the rest of his teammates.
“I know that I’m going to have a lot of touches of the rock and once I get rolling and I attract them (the defense) to me, that opens up points and buckets for my team,”
— Moss
At the half the Spartans led 54-41. Garland was well on his way to recording a 16 point and nine steal night. What makes the performance and season special for Garland is his two year hiatus from the game of basketball. Quickly the Spartan big man has become a staple in the starting lineup becoming one of the best rebounders and defenders on the team.
“He has a different gear. I don’t have to tell him to get going, he’s going to stop the best guy.”
— Coach Jefferson
Garland has developed well in his first year with the Spartans and at this point in this season his game has started to evolve. With his offensive production starting to ramp up, now the first-year Spartan has solidified himself as a reliable two-way power.
“I think I’m getting better, and I’m scoring a little bit more. When I first got here I wasn’t really scoring and I’m getting closer with my teammates.”
— Garland
Moss found himself in foul trouble in the second half so that opened the door for another Spartan to step up. That scoring responsibility was picked up by Darius Davis who once again had a monster second half. In his last game at home vs the Paul Quinn Tigers, Davis scored 15 points after only scoring two in the first half. This time around, after scoring four points in the first, Davis scored 20 points in the second half.
“I’m confident in my shot regardless, I know I’m going to make the next shot so I’m going to keep shooting.”
— Davis
Early in the season, coach Jefferson had an exchange with Davis trying to remind him to think about the big picture.
“I know you’re not getting minutes right now, but when the time is right, when we need you, I need you to get in there and be ready,” Jefferson said thinking back to the discussion he had with Davis.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Spartans as they face the Lackland Warhawks on Saturday. The days in between games, especially on a short break, are just as important as the games themselves. Coach Jefferson understands the challenge of making these days effective while also making sure to keep his guys fresh for gameday.
“Right now I just want them to work on their skill set so we can get more time in the gym and get more shots up,” coach Jefferson said.

Spartans will look to extend their winning streak to 10 on Saturday at Rouse High School in Leander, TX. Tip-off is set for 4 pm.
