Texas Spartans Announce Women's Basketball Program and Head Coach Brandon Taylor
As the Texas Spartans athletic department gears up to enter year two, a new opportunity has become available for some of the nation's best recruits to take their talents to the next level.
Athletic Director Darnell Newman has announced the creation of the women's basketball program to be led by head coach Brandon Taylor. The program will enter their first year of play this upcoming season but coach Taylor has already hit the recruiting trail hard, visiting with potential Spartans and hosting walk-on tryouts.
A Coach Built for This Moment
Coach Taylor brings nearly 20 years of coaching experience dating back to 2006. His most recent stop was at Hinds Community College, where he elevated the Lady Bulldogs to a 15-win season after the program had picked up only 11 wins in the previous eight seasons combined.
Although Coach Taylor achieved immense success in Mississippi, including developing current UNC Charlotte head coach Tamika Reed, his sights were set on returning to the Lone Star State.
"I spent most of my career in the Texas leagues, and I've made relationships with those coaches so I had already been on the lookout for positions in Texas." — Head Coach Brandon Taylor
A Track Record of Developing Champions
As important as winning is in collegiate athletics, the true mark of a great program and coach is the ability to develop players and prepare athletes for the next level. This skill is arguably the most important one to have at the JUCO level.
Coach Taylor has played a major role in developing multiple All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American players throughout his career. While at Hinds Community College, five of the six eligible sophomores transferred to four-year universities, continuing both their academic and athletic careers. During his time at Tyler Junior College he helped produce WBCA and NJCAA First Team All-American Jane Asinde, as well as NJCAA All-Americans Promise Taylor and Salimatou Kourouma.
Coach Taylor also experienced success on the national stage at Trinity Valley University. While serving as a coaching assistant at the JUCO powerhouse, his squads won consecutive conference and regional championships. That hard work and dedication resulted in an NJCAA national tournament appearance and a national championship.
Family First, Winning Always
With the depth of experience Coach Taylor brings, he has spent years learning from championship coaches at every level. While building a program from the ground up presents unique challenges, Coach Taylor plans to approach it the same way he always has: with an open door and genuine investment in every player who steps through it.
"I treat my players like they're my kids. The program is going to be based on me being that family man with an open door policy." — Head Coach Brandon Taylor
The Spartans will look to hit the ground running in year one, announcing themselves with presence and authority. As Community Christian College Texas Spartans work through the offseason and into the summer, excitement and anticipation will continue to build for this young program.
No Surrender. No Retreat.
