Complete Team Effort Required in Spartans’ 84-81 Win Over Lackland Warhawks
Leander, Texas

The Community Christian College Texas Spartans stayed close to home looking to extend their
win streak to 10 in Leander, TX and stay undefeated in the new year. Traveling all the way from
San Antonio, the Lackland Warhawks posed a formidable challenge to the Spartans. Although
Saturday afternoon showcased one of the poorest shooting performances by the Spartans this
season, they were still able to pull off the win; showing more drive and courage in the face of
adversity.
The game started as typical as any other game this season. Jaxson Moss knocked down a
catch-and-shoot three from the wing off of an assist from Jamari Alexander. It seemed like the
Spartans’ leading scorer and captain was well on his way to replicating the 28-point performance
he had just days ago in San Antonio. However, the Spartans shot just 34% from the field and
26% from downtown while losing the turnover battle 24–21.
Based on the box score alone, all signs pointed to the Spartans’ win streak snapping and moving
to an overall record of 13–3. Yet the difference Saturday was in the hustle plays made and the
success at the free throw line.
Hustle Defines the Game
With 14:30 left in the first half, the Warhawks looked to capitalize on a fast break to extend their
lead to 14–9. That’s when Amare Carter flew through the air at full speed after his own miss and
blocked the shot away. The block rivaled a similar one he recorded later in the game with 2:55
left in the second half — again erasing what appeared to be a guaranteed basket.
“I just try to do the best I can to help my team win. If I can’t score on offense, I have to make sure I stop them on defense.”
— Amare Carter
Carter finished with three blocks, two steals, nine rebounds, and 12 points. Saturday marked one
of the best all-around performances of the season for the freshman from Round Rock, TX.
“Amare is that workhorse that you need on the team. He doesn’t complain, he doesn’t gripe — he just gets to it.”
— Head Coach Donald Jefferson
Defense Wins It
The Spartans totaled nine blocks on the day. Da’on Garrett added three, Moss had two, and
Darius Davis recorded one. At minimum, 18 points were erased — enough to completely swing
the outcome in the Warhawks’ favor.
“They step up every time. We knew we had to go the extra mile to get these guys out of here.”
— Head Coach Donald Jefferson
Closing Time
The game came down to clutch free throws late. Jamari Alexander led all scorers with 18 points
and knocked down the final two free throws to ice the game. Moss and Davis each added 17
points, combining for eight free throws in the closing minutes.
Up Next
The Spartans will travel to CCC Southwest in Houston on February 11 with tip-off set for
8 p.m. Only one of the final five games will be at home as the Spartans prepare for a strong
finish to the season.
